Hojai in the sixties of the last century was a quiet, non-descript rural hub and the establishment of a college, by all stretch of imagination, was a momentous event. A group of ambitious and progressive citizens led by Mr J.K.Kedia and Mr Dilip Dutta among others took a bold step that eventually materialized in the form of Hojai College. Hojai College, one of the premiere institutions of higher learning in Hojai, once famed to be the “granary of Assam”, was established in 1964 . As the College is entering the threshold of its Golden Jubilee it has grown in size and stature and today not only Hojai and its neighbouring areas but Karbi Anglong sends its students to Hojai College to pursue higher studies.
What started in 1964 with about a hundred students in the Arts stream and only six teachers has now become a three-faculty college having Arts, Science and Commerce streams with two thousand students and a faculty strength of four score teachers.
All the undergraduate courses conducted by the college are affiliated to Gauhati University. The College switched over from the B.A/B.Sc/B.Com (1+1+1 system) to the Semester System under the new regulations introduced by the University in July, 2011. The college offers a wide choice of undergraduate courses both at major and general level in disciplines of Arts, Science and Commerce.
Hojai College draws its academic strength from its competent faculties , well-eqipped laboratories and its resourceful library. Seminars, workshops and various extension programmes further liven up the institutional environment The college is all set to introduce B.A/B.Com (general) under distance mode too through IDOL (Institute of Distance and Open Learning) of Gauhati University from the academic session 2012-2013 with the same syllabus and same mode of examination like that of the present semester system for the benefit of those students who cannot pursue study as regular candidates. The IGNOU Study Centre set up under the Convergence Scheme has already a large number of students enrolled in various courses.
